Walking trail LAKE VODOCHA – village of VODOCHA - MONASTERY COMPLEX ST. LEONTIUS, village of VODOCHA - MONASTERY CHURCH HOLY MOTHER OF GOD ELEUSA, village of VELJUSA

This walking trail is of great importance. It attracts visitors with the splendid view of the complex of “Vodochki” Churches, including: “​​St. Leontius” in the village of Vodocha, “Holy mother of God Eleusa” in the village of Veljusa, as they represent one of the most important locations in church history, not only in the South-Eastern part of Macedonia, but also in the Balkans.

The walking trail is fully penetrable, for both pedestrians and vehicles. It is designed for rest, relaxation, recreational, research, and educational purposes.

The trail starts from the lake of Vodocha, which offers many sporting activities (walking, jogging, and fishing). Before the entrance to the village of Vodocha there are three small fountains with cold portable water.

Then the trail continues to the village of Vodocha, where you can visit the most beautiful complex of churches, “​​St. Leontius”, located in the area of Vodocha which of immeasurable value, both for the municipality of Strumica, and for the Republic of Macedonia.

The village of Vodocha is linked with the legendary event, of the blinding of soldiers of Tzar Samuil. The walking trail continues to “Holy mother of God Eleusa” monastery, in the village of Veljusa. The place is paradise for the eyes and soul, as here one can feel true peace, and tranquillity.

The two monastery complex in the villages of Vodocha and Veljusa are ideal places for visiting, or for development of monastery tourism. The trail offers circular movement, towards the city of Strumica.

  • Flora and fauna:

The walking trail attracts many visitors for its clean environment, clean air, fresh spring water, and the village idyllic colourfulness. The flora is rich with both long and short stemmed forests.

The lower parts are prevalent with short stemmed forest, including: raspberries, blackberries, currants, blueberries, dog rose, etc. There are also several varieties of tea, and mushrooms, including: chanterelles – cantharellus; champignon- agaricus bisporus and parasol mushroom - Macrolepiota procera. Among the deciduous trees, most prevalent are: betuala alba – birch; tilia sp. – linden; acer sp. – maple. The evergreens include: pinus sp. – pine; abies alba – fir; cupressus sp. - cypress, juniperus sp. - juniper.

Fauna that can be spotted on the trail include: rabbits, wild boar, wolves and foxes. Among the birds that can be seen are: nightingales, pheasants, partridges, eagles and falcons, and there are also various kinds of insects.
